The Annual General Meeting for Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH), a company listed on the South Pacific Stock Exchange, is scheduled for Thursday, 21 August 2008, 9.30am, at the Lali Room, Holiday Inn, Suva.
ATH made a net profit of over F$46 million for its latest financial year ending 31 March 2008.
With the entry of Digicel into the mobile telephony market this year, some pressure is expected on ATH's margins and profits over the coming years.

Expansion of our services
We have been busy over the last two months completing Strategic Plans for the Fiji National Provident Fund and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited.
Fiji National Provident Fund is the largest player in Fiji's financial system and has total asset of over F$3 billion, making up around 38% of total financial system assets.
Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited is the holding company for Telecom Fiji Limited and owns a part of Vodafone Fiji Limited. It has management rights over FINTEL.
Over February 2008, we were working on preparing a capacity development plan for a UNAIDS project in the South Pacific. The work included preparing for and facilitating a regional workshop held at Denarau, Fiji. That work has also been completed with the Report submitted to UNAIDS.
Currently, we are developing a Contingency Planning or Business Resumption Planning Model. Similar to our Strategic Planning Model, we will use our Contingency Planning Model to develop Contingency Planning/Business Resumption Plans for clients.

Another new client : Amalgamated Telecom Holdings
We have just begun work with a new client, Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH). ATH has 100% ownership of other telecommunications companies in Fiji including Telecom Fiji Limited and ATH Technology Park Limited. ATH also owns 90% of Fiji Directories Limited.
Telecom Fiji, on the other hand, has 100% shares with Internet Services Fiji, Transtel Limited and Xceed Pasifika Limited. Telecom Fiji also owns 51% shares with Vodafone Fiji Limited.
For ATH, we are facilitating workshops for management and the Board and will help put together a new Strategic Plan for financial years ending March 2009, 2010 and 2011.
We are again using a Strategic Planning model that we have developed ourselves. Mr Nacanieli Rika, lecturer in Accounting and Finance, University of the South Pacific, will again be assisting us with this project.

Government opens up telecommunications sector
Government has opened up the telecommunications sector.
Currently, Government is in the process of negotiating a compensation package for the monopoly provider of telecommunications services in the country, with the assistance of technical experts from the World Bank. This is expected to be completed by 20 November 2007.
Compensation may be in cash or other form.
The three companies that currently hold exclusive licenses in the telecommunications sector in Fiji are FINTEL (international calls), Telecom Fiji (domestic fixed line) and Vodafone (mobile).
The opening of the telecommunications sector will bring in more competition as more players are permitted to set up operations in Fiji.

More mobile telecommunications providers being sought
The Interim Government is looking for more mobile telecommunications providers to operate in Fiji.
The Government has expressed interest in issuing more licences to providers of mobile telecommunications to come in and provide services in Fiji.
Digicel, a Caribbean based company, has indicated interest in setting up operations in Fiji.
Currently, only Vodafone Fiji, a subsidiary of Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited, provides mobile services in the country.

Telecommunications companies invest F$110 million
The telecommunications companies in Fiji, Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH) and Vodafone, will be investing a total of F$110 million on capital works in 2007.
Of that amount, ATH will be investing F$77 million to upgrade its telephone network to increase capacity and provide new services while Vodafone will spend F$33 million to upgrade its services in the rural areas.

Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) intends to spend $77million in capital expenditure in the financial year ending March 31, 2008.
Group acting chief executive Tomasi Vakatora said this included $42.2m to be spent on upgrading and extending Telecom Fiji's national telephone network to increase capacity and accommodate new services, and improve internal processes.
"The planned capital expenditure of $77m is the largest investment by the ATH Group since its inauguration in late 1998," Mr Vakatora said.
About $33.1m has been allocated towards upgrading and extending Vodafone Fiji's cellular mobile telephone network.
"This is a clear sign of the group's commitment because it is in addition to $294.9m that has been spent on capital expenditure from the group's inauguration to the end of the last financial year ending March 31, 2007," he said.
Mr Vakatora earlier said the group's financial position remained sound and a good result was expected.
ATHs annual report is expected to be released by the end of June. ATH and its group of companies recorded an interim net after-tax profit of $21.3m for the half year ended September 30, 2006. "

Vodafone is looking at investing $33.1million for the current financial year and upgrade its network concentrating more on rural areas.
Amalgamated Telecom Holdings acting chief executive Tomasi Vakatora said the company was looking forward to investing more on the infrastructure.
This was revealed at the commissioning of the Naigani island base station at Queen Victoria School in Tailevu last Saturday.
He said this would be an additional finance to the $148.4m on capital expenditure the company had invested on since it began operating in 1994.
The ATH group of which Vodafone Fiji is a very valuable member intends to spend a total of $76.8m in capital expenditure in the current financial year to March 31, 2008, Mr Vakatora said.
This amount includes the $33.1m commitment that I have just mentioned for Vodafone Fiji.
It will be in addition to $294.9m the ATH group has spent since its inauguration in late 1988, he said.
Mr Vakatora said this was a clear sign of the groups commitment to Fiji.
As Vodafone Fiji continues to widen coverage, it is also introducing additional services and reducing charges and there is still a lot more to come, he said. "

Telecommunications Deregulation Discussions to start
Discussions will be held on 24 May 2007 with regard to a compensation package to be paid to present telecommunication providers in exchange for the removal of exclusive licences they currently hold.
The discussions are being coordinated by the Ministry of Communications and will be between Government, Amalgamated Telecom Holdings and other telecommunication operators who will be affected by the removal of exclusive licences.
Amalgamated Telecom Holdings' subsidiaries include Telecom Fiji Ltd, Vodafone Fiji Ltd, Fiji Directories Ltd, Connect, Xceed Pasifika Ltd and Transtel Ltd.
Currently, exclusive licences are held by FINTEL (international), Telecom Fiji (domestic fixed line) and Vodafone (mobile).
The telecommunications market is likely to be opened up earlier than exclusive deal given to the companies for which they will be compensated.
Plans for a new legal and regulatory framework as part of the Telecommunications sector reform was endorsed by the Interim Government.

New Internet Service Provider set up
Kidanet, a new Internet Service Provider, has opened for business in Suva, Fiji. The company which is a subsidiary of Fiji International Telecommunications Limited (FINTEL) is now advertising its Internet access rates for homes, businesses and schools.
An interesting feature of Kidanet is that it does not place limits on data downloads per month as is done by the other Internet provider, Connect Fiji. Kidanet also offers cheaper rates compared to Connect.
Home connections range from F$35.00 per month for a speed capacity of 128Kbps, F$97.00 per month for speeds of 256Kbps up to F$376.00 per month for speed capacity of 1,024 Kbps.
The office connection charges range from F$255.00 per month for speed capacity of 256 Kbps up to F$1,074.00 per month for speed capacity of 2,048 Kbps.
School connection rates are the same as those for home connections.
Kidanet will definitely provide a good alternative to Connect Fiji. Interesting to note, though, that both companies belong to the Amalgamated Telecom Holdings' group of companies.

Amalgamated Telecom Holdings declares F$12.6 million dividend
Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) has declared an interim dividend of F$12.6 million (or 3 cents per share) for the six months ended 30 September 2006. The group's two largest shareholders, Fiji National Provident Fund and Government will receive F$7.4 million and F$4.4 million, respectively.
Profits after tax for that period was F$21.3 million.
The declaration of the interim dividends was based on expectations by the group that it will deliver a satisfactory result for the full year ended 31 March, 2007.
ATH is listed on the South Pacific Stock Exchange.
